Project Overview
Client: Nottingham Tennis Centre
JHA Architecture was appointed by Nottingham Tennis Centre to provide design services for the installation of a temporary inflatable air hall over four existing tennis courts.
The project was intended to complement the centre’s existing covered facilities and increase the number of courts that could remain in productive use through the winter months, when the uncovered courts would otherwise have limited availability.

Key Features
The project brought together a focused package of improvements tailored to the client’s operational and user requirements.
- Temporary inflatable air-hall structure
- Coverage of four existing tennis courts
- Extended winter use of existing sports infrastructure
- Integration with established tennis-centre facilities
- Project part-funded by the Lawn Tennis Association

Design Approach
The project focused on adapting existing outdoor courts for seasonal enclosure rather than creating an entirely new sports building. This approach allowed the centre to increase covered court capacity while retaining the underlying tennis infrastructure.
The design needed to respond to the practical requirements of an inflatable structure, court clearances, access and seasonal operation, while fitting into the wider day-to-day use of Nottingham Tennis Centre.
Project Outcome
The air hall increased the flexibility of the tennis centre by enabling four existing courts to be used during colder and wetter months. The scheme demonstrates a pragmatic way of extending the value and seasonal capacity of established sports facilities, supported in part by Lawn Tennis Association funding.
