Anaerobic Digestion Plants

JHA Architecture has been involved in the development of AD plants at a number of sites around England. The plants take waste food that would otherwise be thrown away, from the likes of supermarkets, restaurants, hotels etc and uses the material to break it down by anaerobic action in sealed containers to produce biomethane and an inert digestate material.

The gas can either be used to power CHP’s to produce electricity or it is refined and exported into the national gas grid.

The digestate is used as a natural fertiliser for agricultural use. Thus what was a waste material is all but fully recycled into usable products thus reducing the country’s use of landfill.
