Project Overview
JHA Architecture was appointed as Lead Designer to deliver a new biobed facility for one of our long-standing clients, providing a sustainable solution for the treatment of contaminated process water and odorous air generated by the site's industrial operations.
Working collaboratively with process engineers, specialist designers, equipment suppliers and the wider project team, the project was delivered through all RIBA Stages 0–7, from initial feasibility and planning through to construction, commissioning and site oversight.

How the Biobed Works
A biobed is a natural filtration system that uses layers of organic materials to allow naturally occurring microorganisms to break down pollutants.
- Organic filtration media including woodchip, compost and soil
- Natural biological treatment of contaminated process water
- Reduction of unpleasant odours before release to the environment
- Lower-energy alternative to older chemical scrubber systems
- Designed for straightforward operation and long-term maintenance

Design Approach
The facility was carefully integrated into the existing operational site, balancing technical process requirements with efficient construction and long-term maintainability.
JHA Architecture coordinated the multidisciplinary design team throughout the project, working with specialist designers, process engineers, equipment suppliers and contractors to ensure the architectural solution supported the treatment process while remaining practical to construct, operate and maintain.

Operational Impact
The completed biobed provides a reliable, low-maintenance solution that improves environmental performance while supporting the day-to-day operation of the site. By naturally treating contaminated water and filtering odorous air, the system reduces the environmental impact of industrial processes without relying on energy-intensive treatment methods or harsh chemicals.
During construction, JHA Architecture acted as Lead Designer, coordinating the multidisciplinary design team and overseeing contractors on site to support safe, efficient delivery in accordance with the client's operational requirements.

Sustainability and Future Readiness
The biobed forms an important part of the client's wider sustainability strategy, helping to reduce emissions, improve water quality and minimise the environmental impact of the site.
By harnessing natural biological processes rather than energy-intensive mechanical treatment systems, the facility lowers operational energy demand and contributes towards reducing the site's carbon footprint. Designed with longevity and ease of maintenance in mind, it provides a resilient solution capable of supporting the client's environmental objectives for many years to come.
Project Outcome
This project demonstrates JHA Architecture's ability to deliver complex industrial and environmental infrastructure through every stage of the RIBA Plan of Work. Acting as Lead Designer from concept through to completion, JHA coordinated multiple specialist disciplines while providing contract administration and site oversight.
The result is a modern, environmentally responsible facility that enhances operational performance while supporting the client's commitment to sustainability, carbon reduction and responsible environmental management.
