Project: Christ the King Catholic Church, Rossington
JHA Architecture supported a comprehensive programme of improvement works to Christ the King Catholic Church, addressing essential building services, fabric repairs and internal refurbishment.
The project was carefully planned to improve safety, comfort and long-term performance while retaining the church's distinctive architectural character, including its brick arcades, dark timber roof structure and intimate arrangement of worship spaces.
Scope of Works
The refurbishment brought together essential technical upgrades and sensitive repair work within a single coordinated programme.

Design Approach
The design approach focused on upgrading the building without diminishing its established ecclesiastical identity. New interventions were detailed to sit comfortably alongside the existing brickwork, timber pews, radiators and painted surfaces.
The new confessional facility was introduced discreetly beneath the existing arcade, using glazed timber doors and simple internal partitions to create privacy while maintaining visual continuity with the surrounding church interior.
Preserving Architectural Character
The church is defined by a strong rhythm of brick arches, clustered windows and exposed dark-painted roof trusses. The refurbishment retained these features as the primary expression of the interior.
Repairs and redecoration refreshed the surrounding surfaces, allowing the original craftsmanship and proportions of the building to remain prominent while creating a cleaner, brighter and more cohesive setting for worship.
Lighting and Building Services
The new lighting scheme was designed to improve visibility across the nave, side aisles and sanctuary while respecting the scale and atmosphere of the church. Large circular pendant fittings provide even illumination beneath the pitched roof and complement the geometry of the existing arches.
Alongside the lighting improvements, the complete re-wire and new fire alarm installation provide safer, more dependable infrastructure for the parish and support the continued use of the building.
Project Outcome
The completed works have renewed Christ the King Church as a welcoming, functional and visually coherent place of worship. Essential repairs and services upgrades have been integrated with a sensitive interior refurbishment, extending the useful life of the building while preserving the architectural qualities valued by the parish.
